It’s a universal story! We have all felt the pain, anger, and frustration of being ripped off. We leave our construction site in good condition and everything secure for the night – or so we thought!
The next morning upon arriving ready to go and eager to make some great progress – the first thing we see is broken locks, open doors, scattered materials and many thousands of dollars worth of tools equipment and materials stolen. Our crews are stopped. Instead of progress we now have to spend valuable time and energy replacing stolen items, repairing damages and alerting authorities and filling out police reports, etc. etc.
The police are frustrated and generally unable to be of much help.
The financial losses to the construction industry as a result of theft of tools materials and equipment are staggering and they are exponentially worse in a down market. More people are desperate enough to steal and there are fewer projects to pick from.
The first time it happened to me (many years ago) I was determined to catch the thieves and make them pay! I tried many ideas for securing against it happening again, but in time relaxed my guard again and was hit again. I tried all of the same old ideas – better locks, all night lights, conex boxes, chain link fences, police patrols, etc. with little results and never feeling really secure. I tried to find a security company who would be willing to set up some type of security system on my projects, but with constantly changing site conditions, darkness at critical times and only 6 months of monitoring fees - they couldn’t help me.
